These expressive stitched stories were created by individuals and groups across North Wales with creative practitioner Suzette Smart. We hope that this is just a beginning and that in the future we can reach out to the many groups who are not represented here.

These distinctive stitched stories express individual lived experiences, cultural heritage and emotions. In planning the workshops, a set of woven fabrics in muted tones were prepared to use as the background for the collages. A wide selection of textile fabrics was specifically sourced and chosen for individual groups to work with. The colours and patterns were selected for their connection to that group’s heritage, ethnicity and cultures. The materials were both new and repurposed. The brief to each group suggested input which might include personal fabrics, printed information and photographs.

Suzette prepared her own collaged story samples to inspire participants and show how the materials available might be used. The samples showed plenty of stitched ideas too. There were demonstrations throughout the day which showed how to build a collage and to stitch ideas.

The creative and mindful nature of these processes allowed for natural storytelling in pictorial and written forms to develop. The contents are woven together presenting a snapshot of the wide-ranging histories and cultures of Pobl Fel Ni / People like Us in North Wales.
