Animated films inspired by Caradog Prichard’s novel One Moonlit Night
An installation by artist Jo Lawrence in collaboration with the Department of Music, Drama and Performance, Bangor University.
Location: White Wall (level 2)
Date: 5 December – 16 January
Launch with live performance: Sunday 5 December, 5.30pm
No ticket required
Based on Caradog Prichard’s iconic Welsh novel ‘Un Nos Ola Leuad’ which celebrates its 60th anniversary this year, this installation in Pontio’s main atrium will feature animated films created by Jo Lawrence, together with an original score by postgraduate student Tomasz Edwards.
In the piece we witness the unfolding of a polarised world, where mountains slide apart to reveal the mirrored village of Bethesda, a place of light and shadow, of angels and miracles. The hypnotic score is punctuated by the rhythmic voices of the villagers, who call out their names across the moonlit valleys.
To launch the installation, there will be a live, instrumental performance of Tomasz Edwards’ composition in Pontio on the 5th of December, coinciding with the centenary celebration of Music at Bangor University.
The project is generously supported by Colwinston Trust.
Jo Lawrence
Jo Lawrence is an artist/filmmaker whose work integrates mixed media collage, film, pixilation, puppetry and animation. Jo’s films have been broadcast, screened in galleries and shown widely at international film festivals. Her residencies at the V&A (London), National Media Museum (Bradford), Four Corners Gallery (London), Lightworks (Blackpool) and her many commissions including films for Channel 4, Tate Britain (Max Reinhardt for Tate Late) and Animate Projects have all presented opportunities for development of a highly personal approach.
