Bywyd Hybrid Life Exhibit poster

7.10 - 5.11.2023

Pontio is thrilled to present this group exhibition to coincide with the IKT Symposium this October.

In Pontio’s public spaces, the blurred intersection of contemporary daily life and technology is explored through a series of immersive, digital and sculptural artworks. Even the most advanced technologies and innovations are rooted in physical, material sources, and all the artists offer original perspectives on this hybrid life and explore the tension inherent in its formation. With thanks to IKT and Mostyn for the collaboration.

Art work by Damatosh

DAMATOSH

Datamosh is a collaboration between Guy Mayman and Paul R Jones: a site of excavation and construction which re-animates obsolete technology and information. For Hybrid Life, DATAMOSH presents a compilation of extensive video archive and a new work specifically created for the IKT Symposium: a spatial collage of objects, performance, images and sound which acts as a feedback loop celebrating unpredictable, fluid configurations.

PAUL R JONES

Paul R Jones is engaged in creative research that explores the process of transferring digital images from game engines to analog media, sparking inquiries into materiality within post-digital discourse. This hybrid image-making practice challenges conventional definitions of photographic and video work, prompting a re-evaluation of the essence of these mediums in the face of rapidly evolving technology.

GWENBA

Gwenba presents O’HYD[RA], a short film based on water, memory, time and cycles which explores the ability to heal and regenerate our sense of self and being after loss.

For generations her family has been drawn to a beach in West Wales as a place of restoration. The narrative unfolds in conjunction with the life cycle of an “immortal” microorganism known as hydra, a genus of small freshwater organisms that regenerates its cells every 20 days.

Art by Mark Eaglen form Hybrid Life exhibit at Pontio

MARK EAGLEN

Mark Eaglen explores relationships of art, science, technology and nature. His practice is research led, with traditional processes often employed alongside modes of interaction afforded by new technologies and investigations into scientific theory. Recent works explore performative hybrids of sculptural, interactive and real-time processing hierarchies. ‘Quantum Foam and the Scutoid Variations’, a new interactive video work realised within these investigations, is shown as part of Hybrid Life.

Art by Laura Cameron for Hybrid Life exhibit at pontio

LAURA CAMERON

Laura Cameron uses crochet and needle felting to create soft sculptures which reflect her fascination with anatomy, medical history, public health and the natural world. Taking things which are usually hidden or microscopic, and showing them as visible and vibrant, is key to communicating science in an engaging and accessible way. Laura enjoys subverting the expectations which often accompany textiles, promoting them as a place where art, science, and stories meet.
