During the Winter of 2020, alongside Bangor City Council, we here at Pontio worked on a Christmas video that celebrated Bangor. We received video clips from many business, organisations, communities and institutions in Bangor.

Un Seren (One Star) was written on a rainy afternoon in Upper Bangor, by singer-songwriter Delwyn Siôn in 1982. The song is a staple of Welsh language music at Christmas and many people have covered the song over the years. Alys Williams (whose grandfather was Wilbert Lloyd Roberts - one of the founders of Bangor Welsh-language Theatre) first captured the hearts of Welsh viewers when she took part in The Voice in 2013, since then her career has gone from strength to strength. In 2015, she recorded her own enchanting version of Un Seren, arranged by Steffan Rhys Williams. This year Alys has worked with Elise Jones, a young singer from Bangor, to bring the community together to celebrate a Christmas that is very different for all of us, and to end 2020 with some positivity.

Elise was a member of BLAS (Pontio’s drama workshops) when she was a pupil at Ysgol Glancegin back in 2013. Over the years Elise has taken part in many projects with us and in 2018, as part of our Lleisiau Voices project sang in our Studio Theatre for the first time. Encouraged by some of Pontio’s staff, Elise received singing lessons – building her confidence and developing her voice.
