Deiniol Day - Pontio celebrates Bangor’s history Saturday, 12pm 24 July

A medieval themed family day which includes a number of exciting events to celebrate the city’s history. Taking place around Bangor’s High Street and Cathedral grounds, activities will include a living history village, re-enactments of medieval combats by re-enactment society, ‘Y Drudion’, slate and wood craft and candle making demonstrations. The Datgeiniaid (the Declaimers) will demonstrate how medieval Welsh poetry and music was performed, accompanied by professional musicians, including medieval harpist Paul Dooley. In the Gwynedd Museum and Art Gallery, there will be performances by local re-enactment group, ‘The Nameless Dogs’ and a host of craft activities including designing medieval clay tile.

A medieval band will lead a colourful procession through the streets with a giant figure of Saint Deiniol, made by children from Maesgeirchen and Small World Theatre Company. To symbolise how Bangor once meant a 'wattle-fenced enclosure' they will ceremoniously place Saint Deiniol on the Cathedral Green inside a new wattle fence built by wattling experts.

The event will fill Bangor’s High Street and Cathedral grounds with energy and excitement. To celebrate Welsh culture leading artists and crafts-people from North Wales and beyond will join us to celebrate Bangor’s rich heritage and so too, we hope, will many families, friends and tourists.
